The Monasteries of the Höllental: Why We Don't Need Another Eco-Village
Starting 24 August, a popup village of builders, programmers, and ecological economists is settling into the Austrian mountains south of Vienna for a month. They are meeting in the Höllental, a valley of steep limestone cliffs and cold rivers, to run the Valley of the Commons: four consecutive weeks, each built around a different theme, commons economics, cosmo-local production, community living, governance and funding, tested against each other in the same physical place rather than argued about in the abstract.

Höllental translates plainly: Hell Valley. It sounds like a name picked for a postcard, until you actually stand in it. There is no fire here, only limestone stripped bare by ice-age glaciers and a river that never fully warms. That absence of fire might be the more honest version of hell.
Dante kept the flames for the sins everyone expects: greed, violence, fraud. But the very bottom of his Inferno, the worst place he could imagine, is not fire at all. It is ice, a frozen lake called Cocytus, reserved for traitors, people who broke a trust they were specifically given to keep. He placed the coldest circle beneath the hottest, because betrayal, to him, was the colder crime.
That is the more useful hell for what late-stage capitalism has done to the commons. Nobody stormed the village. The commons was let in on good terms, and the terms were broken quietly, one enclosure at a time. Rebuilding it, the work this valley is named for, is not about escaping a burning world. It is about refusing the cold one.
As someone who grew up in Austria, I have a deep connection to these landscapes. The Höllental is a place that shapes your perspective on nature and resilience. My priority this September is being in southern Austria for my father’s 85th birthday, and that will not change for anything. But the Valley of the Commons runs for a full month, not a weekend, and the closing week overlaps with the tail end of my own trip. I am hopeful I can carve out a day or two to pop in, sit in a few of those rooms, and meet some of the people building this in person, rather than only watching it from a distance.
Whether or not that trip to the valley comes together, the questions being asked in the Höllental are critical for anyone interested in building resilient communities. The central theme of the month is not how to drop out of society, but how to rebuild it. It is a challenge to the typical model of the eco-village, and an argument for what we call the cosmo-local network.
The Limits of the Eco-Village
For decades, the standard response to the extraction of late-stage capitalism has been to escape. People buy land in the country, establish an eco-village, grow their own food, and build straw-bale houses. These projects are often beautiful, and they teach us a great deal about regenerative farming and community living.
But as a strategy for systemic change, they face two severe limits.
First, they are geographically isolated. An eco-village is a single node, often dependent on the very economic system it critiques for its income, tools, and communications. It remains a lifestyle choice for the few who can afford to buy in, rather than a scalable alternative for the many who cannot.
Second, they are vulnerable to capture. Without a broader network, a single community is fragile. When the initial founders grow old or when local regulations change, the project often folds or is bought out, reverting to private property.
The Valley of the Commons points to a different institutional model: the cosmo-local hub, or what Michel Bauwens and Vitalik Buterin have described as the modern monastery.
The Hub as a Monastery
During the collapse of the Roman Empire, it was the monasteries that carried European society across the dark ages. They did not do this by simply praying in isolation. They did it by keeping books, maintaining seed collections, and preserving crafts like ironworking, beer brewing, and stonemasonry. They were networks of knowledge and production, coordinated across borders through shared protocols, while remaining deeply rooted in their local soils.
A modern cosmo-local hub operates on the same principle. The rule is simple: what is light is global, what is heavy is local.
Design, software, recipes, and governance structures are shared globally as open digital commons. But manufacturing, food production, energy generation, and care work happen locally. A hub does not try to be self-sufficient in isolation. It is a local node in a global network.
This shifts the dynamic from peer-to-peer (P2P) communication to peer-for-peer (P4P) production. We are no longer just coordinating as equals on the internet. We are building the tools to provide for one another, using local makerspaces and cooperative networks to manufacture the things we need, bypassing the global corporate supply chains.
Practical Cosmo-Local Tools in the Höllental
The gathering in the Höllental is a sandbox for testing these tools at scale.
First, the event is experimenting with open value accounting. Traditional accounting only measures financial transactions, ignoring ecological health and community labor. In the Höllental, participants are using shared ledgers to track resource flows and value contributions, proving that we can coordinate complex activities without a bank or a corporate platform in the middle.
This is not a scaled-down compromise, waiting for better tools to arrive. It is arguably the correct posture for governing anything this complex. James C. Scott’s study of high-modernist planning showed that states fail their own citizens when they try to make a landscape fully legible before acting on it, flattening the local, practical knowledge that actually keeps a system working (Scott, 1998). Cybernetics reached a similar conclusion from a different direction: some systems are too complex to model in full and have to be governed as a black box, watched through their inputs and outputs rather than mapped completely from the inside (Ashby, 1956). The Cynefin framework gives the practical version of the same idea: in a complicated system you can plan ahead, but in a genuinely complex one the discipline is to probe, sense, and respond (Snowden & Boone, 2007). A hub the size of the Höllental gathering will never have the complete picture of everything it touches. Open value accounting does not pretend otherwise. It works because it does not need to.
Second, they are building local-first communication systems. Relying on commercial telecommunications networks makes a community vulnerable to grid failures and corporate surveillance. The Höllental project is deploying LPWAN mesh networks running Reticulum, a cryptography-based protocol that allows local node-to-node communication over long distances without internet access. This is technology that is low-cost, resilient, and owned by the community.
Third, they are grounding the work in physical manufacturing. The hub’s makerspace is prototyping tools that fit the region’s needs, such as automated water-management nodes and zine printing stations. These are not proprietary products. The designs are open, allowing anyone in the global network to download, modify, and build them.
The Order of the Hubs
The wager of the Valley of the Commons is that a single beautiful site is not enough. The point is the network.
If we can connect these hubs across regions and borders, we build a system that has no single point of failure and no single point of capture. If one node is compromised by local political shifts, the global network preserves the knowledge and the software designs. If a supply chain collapses, the local makerspace can manufacture alternatives.
None of that is guaranteed by the network structure alone. The organisers behind the Valley of the Commons are honest about the failure mode that actually kills projects like this: “Getting it wrong in either direction, too rigid or too loose, is how most communities quietly die.” A hub can fail exactly the way an eco-village fails, by becoming too rigid to adapt or too loose to hold together, and the cosmo-local model does not repeal that risk. It only gives a failing node somewhere to hand its knowledge on to before it goes.
Whether I make it to the valley in person or not, the work being done there is larger than any single participant or event. It is the beginning of a long-term reconstruction: building the institutions, protocols, and practical tools that will carry our knowledge and our communities across the transitions of the coming decade.
We do not need another eco-village. We need the monasteries of the twenty-first century.
